The Untermyer Park and Gardens is a non-profit organization that, in collaboration with the City of Yonkers, assists the restoration of Samuel Untermyer's gardens in Yonkers, New York.
It is situated in Yonkers, New York, in the town of Westchester County, approximately north of New York Municipal. Untermyer Park and Gardens is a historic 43-acre (17-hectare) municipal public park located in the heart of downtown. The Greystone Estate, which encompassed 150 acres (61 ha) and was built by Samuel Untermyer, has been maintained in the shape of a park. It includes a Walled Garden inspired by ancient Indo-Persian gardens, a small Grecian-style open-air amphitheater with two facing sphinxes supported by tall Ionic columns, a classical pavilion with stoa and loggias, a rock-and-water feature known as "The Temple of Love," and other features.
Untermyer, a prominent lawyer and civic leader, began developing the gardens in 1916. The gardens were designed by architect and landscape designer William W. Bosworth, who added fountains by Charles Wellford Leavitt and sculptures by Paul Manship and other artists to complement the architecture and landscaping. This garden, which staged performances by notable dancers, actors, and singers, was widely regarded as one of the greatest in the United States, was available to the public regularly, and was routinely open to visitors.
He had wanted to leave his whole inheritance to the United States, or at least the State of New York, when he died in 1940, or to the City of Yonkers if he perished in a car accident. Yonkers eventually consented to take a portion of the estate. Untermyer Park and Gardens were established in his honor on the plot of land that served as the heart of the gardens and has subsequently been expanded. [2] 1974 was the year it was included on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Untermyer Park and Gardens's mission is to restore and revitalize Samuel Untermyer's once-grand gardens, which are now part of a City municipal park in Yonkers, New York. The Yonkers Conservancy, in collaboration with the City of Yonkers, will present a riot of color in the spectacular landscape planned by Welles Bosworth and completed in 1916. The importance placed on the lives of Samuel and Minnie Untermyer will increase the attraction and significance of these gardens for all people as a result of this focus.
You must contact the Yonkers Parks Department at (914) 377-6450 if you have any queries concerning permits for activities or photography in the gardens. You may pick up your permit from the Yonkers Parks Department, which is located at 285 Nepperhan Avenue in Yonkers, New York, after making plans to reserve a time for it.
